Dr. Geethani Galgoda - Head of Laboratories

MBBS, Diploma (Medical Microbiology), MD (Medical Microbiology)

Dr Geethani Galagoda joined Lanka Hospitals Diagnostics (LHD) as the Head of Laboratories, in August 2016, where she also heads the Serology section of the Department of Microbiology at LHD. She completed her MD in 2000 and her post graduate training at the prestigious Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, in the USA. Dr. Galgoda was appointed as a consultant virologist at the Medical Research Institute (MRI) where she had worked as a medical officer. While working here, she also went on to head the Measles and Rubella National Laboratory, Rotavirus National Laboratory, Japanese Encephalitis National Laboratory and the Hepatitis Laboratory.

In the academic sphere, Dr. Galgoda has several publications and scientific presentations under her name and she has provided consultative services to the Ministry of Health, where she has operated as an undergraduate and postgraduate teacher and examiner in the fields of Microbiology, Virology, Pathology, Venereology and Transfusion Medicine.

Her contribution to science is not limited to Microbiology. She was also the Secretary of the Research Committee and the Ethics Review Committee of the MRI for 5 years. She has been an active member of the Sri Lanka College of Microbiologists and she is also a founding member of the Allergy and Immunology Society of Sri Lanka. She also presently holds the position of Secretary and Vice President of the Vaccine Forum of Sri Lanka.

She was one of the editors of SLMA Guidelines and Information on Vaccines, in 2017 and the Chief Editor of the Biosafety for Medical Laboratories published by the Sri Lanka College of Microbiologists.

Dr. Galgoda, has always been committed to achieving quality and service excellence at LHD, by working diligently to ensure that LHD receives and maintains the prestigious accreditation awarded by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

Dr. Arundathi Kurukulasuriya - Head of Haematology


Dr. Arundathi Kurukulasuriya began her career as a medical officer / Ministry of Health. While working as a lecturer at the University of Colombo / Faculty of Medicine (UCMF), she was awarded a Commonwealth Fellowship for her vision to develop Haematology in the university system.

She enhanced her post graduate studies at the University of London and completed it in Sri Lanka and Australia where she was awarded her FRCPA (Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia) by examination.

She was also the first university academic to be awarded the Accreditation of Senior Teachers in Higher Education (ASTHE) in 2001. Her stellar academic record includes her training in Constructive Design of Learning and Teaching at the Open University of Sri Lanka, Training in script writing by the National Film Cooperation. She utilised these skills to develop a series of interactive videos to improve student learning at the UCFM.

Dr. Kurkukulasuriya’s contribution to science and education is spread across many spheres. She was the secretary of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science Section A (SLAAS), Director of Medical Education at UCFM, Member - Board of Study in Pathology, a Post Graduate trainer and an examiner in Haematology for the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM). She was a founding member of the Sri Lanka College of Haematologists, where she was the President in 2004. She was also the pioneer Chairperson of the Haematology module at the UCFM and she became a full professor of Pathology (Haematology) in 2002.

Upon joining LHD as the Head of Haemotology, Dr. Kurkukulasuriya has tirelessly worked to uphold the quality standards of the department in line with the CAP accreditation and has contributed immensely to the development of this department.

Dr. Kurukulasuriya’s tenure in Oman (2005 – 2011) (2014 –2106)

Dr. Kurukulasuria worked as a Consultant Haematologist and was a founder member of the Haematology Scientific Committee - the body responsible for post graduate training in Oman. Chairperson of the Accreditation Committee, Member of the Faculty Development Committee (entrusted with the task of staff development of Postgraduate Trainers), ’The best trainer in Haematology 2011' by the OMSB were other accolades achieved.

At the Royal Hospital, she was a resource person for Education and Training Department (ETD), Secretary of the Curriculum Committee and the CPD Coordinator for the Department of Haematology where she also taught Haematology to medical students.

In 2012, she became the first Asian to receive the Senior Fellowship Staff and Education Development Association (SFSEDA) UK.

With her leadership the department secured ISO accreditation in 2016 for which she was especially re-recruited in 2014.

Dr. Chandanamali Punchihewa, PhD - Head of Molecular Biology

Dr. Chandanamali Punchihewa is a graduate of the University of Colombo and was one of the first in the country to receive an Honours Degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from a National University. She read for her PhD at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Arizona which is ranked among the top 16 graduate schools in the USA.

Upon winning a competitive Postdoctoral Fellowship, she joined St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which is ranked number 1 among the Paediatric Cancer Hospital in USA, as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Her research during this time involved Anti-Cancer Drug Discovery and Development, and she is a co-inventor and a US patent holder of a potential anti-cancer drug, which acts as an inhibitor of the protein PCNA.

Upon completing this fellowship Dr. Punchihewa continued to carry out research in Molecular Pathology at the same hospital, and co-authored many internationally peer-reviewed research articles published in high-impact journals.

She takes pride as a stellar scientist by becoming the first author of a research article published in one of the world’s highest-ranking journals - ‘Nature’.

In addition to research publications, Dr. Punchihewa has also co-authored literature reviews, and a chapter in a book on ‘Telomeres and Telomerase in Cancer’, published by the Humana Press, USA.

During her tenure as a graduate student and a research professional, Dr. Punchihewa has received many awards and fellowships from the University of Arizona and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in recognition of her invaluable contributions to the fields of Molecular Biology and Anti-Cancer Drug Discovery and Development.

She left USA in 2014 to join LHD, where she has played a key role in setting up our Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory and operating it according to the highest standards set by CAP.

Her all-important initiatives have resulted in LHD being the first laboratory in the country to introduce several new molecular diagnostic tests that are critical for prenatal testing and for patients with cancer.

Dr. Rohini Wadanamby - Consultant Clinical Microbiologist

MBBS, Diploma in Medical Microbiology, MD in Medical Microbiology

Dr. Rohini Wadanamby is the Consultant Clinical Microbiologist who is currently heading the Microbiology Department of LHD. She also utilises her expertise to manage patients with infections that are referred from Lanka Hospitals.

Currently, she is registered to practice medicine under the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC Registration - 9694) and General Medical Council (GMC Registration - 7010390), UK.

After obtaining her postgraduate qualifications in Clinical Microbiology, she completed her foreign training in Infectious Disease and Clinical Microbiology at the combined unit of St Georges NHS Trust in London from 2008 to 2009. Thereafter, she worked in the sphere of Infectious Disease and Clinical Microbiology at the combined unit of Princes Royal and Brighton and Sussex NHS Trust, Hayward Heath, UK.

In Sri Lanka she worked as a Consultant Clinical Microbiologist in the Kandy Teaching Hospital, National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), until her early retirement. During this period, she also provided her services to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Colombo East Base Hospital (CEBH).

She was also involved in many national level Microbiology Services embarked in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Postgraduate Institute of health and College of Microbiologists. She was involved in post graduate and undergraduate teaching, research works in relation to Microbiology and has several publications in Sri Lanka and overseas.

Dr. Wadanamby has supervised and reviewed many post graduate microbiology trainees who have conducted very valuable research projects. She was involved in many social working groups for the betterment of patients as well as institutions where she worked with much passion and dedication.

Following her early retirement from government service she joined LHD as a Consultant Clinical Microbiologist with the challenging task of obtaining the CAP accreditation by implementing quality and service excellence standards over her department. Now, after obtaining the prestigious CAP accreditation she works tirelessly in maintaining CAP standards for a vast array of microbiology diagnostics while introducing and validating new tests.

She is another invaluable member of the LHD group of consultants who are tremendously committed to our success.

Dr. Saroja Siriwardene - Head of Biochemistry

MBBS, Diploma in Pathology, MD Chemical Pathology Hon. Fellow of the College of Pathologists Hon. Fellow of the College of Chemical Pathologists

Dr. Siriwardene’s impressive career record consist of operating as a Consultant Chemical Pathologist at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL) for 18 years. She has also worked full-time as a Chemical Pathology Registrar at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Australia for 2 years, as part of her training

She introduced low-cost, high quality processes to NHSL, which were later adopted by other laboratories and she also developed Dynamic Endocrine Function Testing, during her tenure.

Dr. Siriwardene is the first Chemical Pathologist to be trained and Board-certified by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Sri Lanka and all other Chemical Pathologists, currently operating in Sri Lanka has trained under her. She has been a regular Postgraduate Examiner in Chemical Pathology and a popular Undergraduate Lecturer, sought out by 5 universities.

She was also the Founding President of the Association of Clinical Biochemistry Sri Lanka in 2007 and was the President of the College of Pathologists in 2002.

Following her retirement from the state service, she joined LHD in 2014 as the Head of the Department of Biochemistry, where she played a monumental role in preparing the department for the CAP accreditation, which was achieved 3 years later.

She is a valuable contributor to the development of the Biochemistry Laboratory at LHD, an excellent trouble-shooter and an advocate that spearheads her team to comply with CAP standards.
